Two weeks ago, on March 3rd, we had the pleasure of being invited by GSMA to attend MWC Barcelona. It was the perfect setting to introduce something we’ve been building closely together: our Test Case Generator.

This new solution was born from a challenge that everyone involved in standards knows too well.

    Standards are complex.

Turning them into precise, structured test cases is still largely a manual, time-consuming process, requiring deep expertise and careful interpretation. Engineers must carefully read through long specifications, extract individual requirements, interpret normative language such as “shall”, “should”, or “may”, and then translate those requirements into clear validation steps.

Even with the best teams, this process can take weeks and may introduce inconsistencies across implementations. Requirements may be interpreted differently across teams, traceability between specifications and test cases can be difficult to maintain, and repetitive tasks such as formatting or documentation consume valuable engineering time.

We believed there had to be a better way.

Rather than building a generic AI tool, we partnered directly with GSMA to design the Test Case Generator from real operational needs. We partnered directly with GSMA to design the Test Case Generator from the ground up, starting from real operational needs within the standardization ecosystem. The solution was built collaboratively, tested on real specifications, and continuously refined through discussions and challenges within GSMA working groups.

The focus from the beginning was to design a system that understands the structure of technical specifications and supports engineers in the most demanding parts of the validation process.

The goal was clear: help experts generate high-quality test cases faster while preserving the intent and accuracy of the standards. Human expertise remains at the center of the process.

The Test Case Generator provides engineers with a strong first draft of test cases directly derived from the specification, while ensuring full traceability back to the original requirement. Experts remain responsible for reviewing, validating, and refining the generated tests, ensuring that domain knowledge and engineering judgment remain part of the final result.

What are the benefits for engineers to use a Test Case Generator?

For engineers working with complex specifications, the Test Case Generator helps to:

    • Reach coverage closure faster by generating tests directly from requirements and maintaining visibility across specification sections.

    • Reduce manual verification effort and repetitive test writing by automatically producing structured test cases based on consistent templates.

    • Keep full traceability between requirements and tests, including links to sections of the specification and requirement identifiers.

    • Ensure consistent test suites across teams through standardized formats, terminology, and generation templates.

    • Generate executable test scripts automatically, aligned with project frameworks and repository conventions.

In addition, the tool provides quality indicators and confidence signals that help engineers prioritize their review effort. Instead of reviewing everything manually from scratch, experts can focus their attention on areas where ambiguity, missing validation steps, or weak traceability may occur.

This allows engineers to spend less time writing documentation and more time analyzing results and improving validation.

As an example, generating 560 test cases manually can represent roughly 280 hours of engineering effort.

More importantly, the generated tests are not only faster to produce. They also maintain consistent structure, requirement traceability, and standardized formatting across the entire test suite.

How does the Test Case Generator work?

The Test Case Generator follows a streamlined workflow designed specifically for technical specifications and standardization environments:

    Article content
    1. Upload the specification: Engineers upload PDFs or technical documents. The system ingests the content while preserving the document structure, including sections, tables, figures, and annexes, so that requirements remain linked to their original context.

    2. Extract requirements: The system extracts and normalizes requirements from the specification, capturing requirement IDs, modality (such as “shall”, “should”, or “may”), source references, and surrounding context. This structured layer ensures that each requirement remains traceable to the exact clause in the document.

    3. Generate test cases: Using predefined templates and the contextual information extracted from the specification, the system generates consistent and review-ready test cases. The output follows a controlled structure to keep test suites aligned with team standards.

    4. Analyze quality: A hybrid quality analysis combines deterministic checks with AI-assisted review. This step identifies duplicates, missing validation steps, ambiguous requirements, weak traceability, and low-confidence outputs, while providing indicators on coverage and test quality.

    5. Generate scripts and exports: Once validated, test cases can be converted into executable scripts aligned with project frameworks and repository conventions. The system can also generate export bundles for integration with QA tools or validation workflows.

The system combines structured requirement extraction, domain-specific knowledge bases derived from the specification corpus, and large language models optimized for technical reasoning. This hybrid approach ensures that test generation remains grounded in the specification while benefiting from AI’s ability to interpret complex technical language.

To sum it up, the TCG is a tool that accelerates one of the most demanding steps in interoperability work.

By automatically transforming complex requirements into structured, traceable test cases, the Test Case Generator helps organizations reduce manual effort, improve consistency, and accelerate the path from specification to validation.

Most importantly, it allows experts to focus on what matters most: interpreting standards, validating implementations, and ensuring interoperability across complex systems.
